Turn a Telegram export into a PDF you can read

Telegram Desktop's JSON export gives you a result.json that is built for machines, not for reading. Upload it here and get back a proper transcript, with dates and names, and photos if you want them.

How it works.

Telegram's JSON export is complete but not made for reading. The awkward part is that a message's text is sometimes a plain string and sometimes a list of pieces, which is why some converters leave things like {"type":"bold"} in the middle of a sentence. This puts the sentence back together.

Step 1

Export from Telegram Desktop

In Telegram Desktop, open the chat, click the three dots, choose Export chat history, and pick Machine-readable JSON as the format. Telegram writes a folder with result.json in it, plus your photos if you included them.

Step 2

Upload the folder or the file

Zip the whole folder and drop it here so the photos come through. If you only want the text, the result.json on its own is fine.

Step 3

Check it, then download

You see the messages parsed before paying. The PDF opens with the message count and the date range, then the conversation with dates and names, and photos if you add them.

Four ways to print it.

Every sample below is page one of a real PDF, made from the same sample as the one above by the same code that makes your file. Pick a style when you preview, and change it as often as you like.

Questions, answered.

Why does the free converter I tried put code in the middle of my messages?
Because Telegram writes a message's text as a list of pieces when it contains a link, bold text or a mention, and a tool that dumps that list straight onto the page shows you the pieces. This joins them back into the sentence you actually sent.
Do photos come through?
Yes, if you upload the whole export folder as a zip and choose to include them on the preview, which is an optional extra priced before you pay. Photos sit in a separate folder next to result.json, so the file on its own has the text but not the pictures. A single photo over 2 MB is listed by filename instead.
What about stickers, polls and forwarded messages?
Stickers show as the emoji they stand for, polls show the question and the options, and a forwarded message is labelled with where it came from.
Are the times right?
Telegram writes each message's time twice, once as a readable date with no time zone and once as a unix timestamp. This uses the timestamp, which is exact, and prints it in your own time zone, the one your browser reports. The preview says which zone that is, and you can pick another there, for instance the zone the other person or a court is in. The Formal / legal style also prints the UTC offset beside every time.
What happens to my file?
It is deleted within 7 days, along with the finished PDF. It is used to make your file and nothing else. Nobody reads it.
Do I need an account?
No. There is no signup, no subscription and no password. You upload, you see the result, you pay once if you want it.
